    Alternate History General Discussion

Been ever so slowly reading through Wrapped in Flames on the other place. Boy do I love everything but the division counting and that stuff. Puts my clean to sleep as soon as I start reading it, but the more narrative part (or literally anything that isnt explaining the breakdown of say Grant's...

That good writer would be pushing the scale in a way that doesnt make it obvious that they're agreeing with. The difference between a TL where the Confederates survive the civil war and a TL were the Confederates take DC, win the war, Complete all their Golden Circle Dreams, never abolish...

Whether or not it's better or worse depends on the views of the reader compared to whatever occurs in the TL. And for me usually I prefer when I am not 100% aware of whom the author is pushing the scale down for (tho im fairly sure almost every author does so, just to varying levels of obvious)

Moderately amusing: I've been reading various TLs, even some that've been touted as "great" here etc (and some that were touted as abysmal in the bad alternate history things thread), usually before bed. (I WAS supposed to be reading physical books. Instead of TLs. Maybe I need to try finding...

Personally, it depends on how much the implausible events are tied together. If it's several implausible events that have no interaction, that's less of a problem than if it's 15 implausible events that all required the previous event(s) to even reach the point of "implausible".

Tbf, there's an element of Americans IRL OTL who probably would take the response of "those uppity Germans, Chinese and Soviets, trying to interfere with our planet and it's our god given right as Americans to respond as we please!" They're just not as much in power yet OTL.

I don't remember having ever read the post war part, somehow.

    Alternate History General Discussion

Enjoyed it, but it kinda just replaces the US with the BNA. What I've been wanting is basically I guess a North America that somehow ends up more akin to say, Eastern Europe or such, a bunch of states that are not entirely friends (and some definitely despise each other), but not necessarily...

    Alternate History General Discussion

This is tangentially related: I wish I saw more ATLs t hat had recognisable countries in the new world, but still different. Like, I feel like I always see either the same Trio (Canada, USA, Mexico), sometimes with a CSA (and Quebec), OR it's a Canada, Mexican Empire and a Balkanised US that...

    Alternate History General Discussion

This kind of sounds like the generic "since Patton died, it's far easier for people to just throw "whatever ideology the author wants", (presumably what the author agrees with?), while Eisenhower/MacArthur are more commonly written the "same way" (tbh MacArthur being a fascist or...

Mundial: An alternative history of the Football World Cup

Rejecting this progressive "3 points for a win" system, (because fuck if I'm going to try to figure out how to represent that): I think it's pretty clear who the kings of world football are. Second place is more competitive, 4th seems locked up (For the most part). And then everyone else. I'm...

Mundial: An alternative history of the Football World Cup

The Satanists at FIFA deciding to pivot to 3 points per game at the death of it. This is animal cruelty!

    Least favorite alt-history story?

I find it interesting how over the years I've gradually moved from "narrative" view to "worldbuilding", though I've always held the opinion that both types are fine (if anything AH is "better" for worldbuilding imo than for narratives, as narratives often run into the "would be better without...

    Least favorite alt-history story?

It's interesting having read both Footprint of Mussolini and Death of Russia and then much later reading here the comments on them. I remember reading the TLs, and that's honestly aboit all I remember of them other than "Mussolini does stuff to become a heroic figure" and "Russia go bye bye"...

    Least favorite alt-history story?

In my reading of the thread (I'm almost to the present now!), I've noticed that off all the timelines that've gotten dunked on here, the only one that I've been like "Oh I actually liked that one" is the rvbomally Occult/SCP/whatever one. (which I liked it so much I don't remember the name of...
