The defining question of the last decade of Grand Forks politics has been - should Grand Forks join Vesperia, or should it remain within the United States system, whether as an associated state or incorporated into the Constitution? Before 2023, however, this question was hardly reflected within the election returns; members of the State Assembly were elected or not chiefly due to local factors like religion, ethnicity, and unionization.

The turning point came in December 2021, when Speaker Jeffrey Parker (Gov't-Grand Forks Manchester) sent the first official delegation to Montréal to discuss the legal process of joining confederation. This was followed by Resolution 22A, in which the Assembly resolved to appoint a commission to begin the process of officially joining Vesperia; soon after, the date was officially set for January 1, 2025.

This forced a response from the opposition. Christian Values, the political wing of the Apostolic movement, opposed unification because it would require Grand Forks to repeal laws declaring Christianity the state faith, as well as end capital punishment and criminal penalties for sodomy; the Cooperatives and Socialist Workers opposed the fact that unification would likely undermine the state system of price controls and subsidies on wheat and fuel, as well as state ownership of banking, rail, and the post; and People Power opposed the likely end of Sioux legal autonomy and border rights. All four parties, as well as several independents who opposed the government for other reasons, came out against unification, or at least against the ongoing unification process.

The 2023 election returned a one-seat minority for the government. But while Parker announced his resignation, his successor Lyell Robertson (Gov't-Avalon) is likely to be able to negotiate a compromise, likely including a referendum on confederation and a postponement of the official date to 2026 or 2027. For one thing, the Government made substantial gains, especially in the rural north, complicating the narrative that Grand Forkers rejected the notion of confederation wholesale; for another, many urban opposition MPs, particularly in the Socialist Workers - Popular Front Party, could likely be convinced that a liberalized criminal code and more protections for cultural minorities are worth a slightly less generous welfare state, especially if the exceptions to trade union restrictions negotiated for oilfield workers can be extended to more categories of worker...

The constituency names you've created here are absolutely delicious. Love it

I'm fucking ASHAMED as an American that President Kaine forbid the Union of Justice to step in,you know, the only fucking people who've stopped or can stop Moarte!
Ghana:has elected Kwami Amponsem(aka the Lime Lion) to parliament as an independent . I guess this counts as good news rn.
Atlantis:wow most pathetic coup attempt since 1/6
Britain:Maxwell Morgan and his Public Safety cronies are already calling metahuman registration act . Has anyone told him that Captain Camelot isn't a metahuman so there for wouldn't fall under the system proposed ?

UNSPECIFIC:Getting their budget cut . Must be a day that ends with y .
The Simon Sayz memorial school for the empowered:Announced that they'll maybe reconsider having Team Power stationed out of the school.

Usono de Eŭropo

Formed in 1929 in lingering reaction to First World War and fear of Soviet Union - referred to as "Europe" or "Usono" as shorthand.

Capital: Danzig

Official language: Esperanto (though it took decades to bed in and still, most people speak the 'traditional' language at home and use the old names for places)

States: Norda Francujo (Parizo); Belgio (Lieĝo); Rejnlando (Ruhr); Bavario (Munkeno); Nova Prusujo (Berlino); Danubio (Vieno); Bohemio (Prago); Pollando (Varsovio); Kroatio (Zagrebo)

Military: There is a unified Eŭropa Memdefenda Forto, with static forts still on the Soviet, Italian, and Metropole borders; and a
Eŭropa Komercista Gvardio, a joint naval/air-arm group designed for protecting shipping and air traffic. Most male citizens (and in some states, female ones too) have to perform a year of national service between their eighteenth and twenty-second birthdays, with university students typically doing it earlier. Volunteer soldiers form the elite brigades. On paper, a formidable force designed for joint operations and holding enemies at bay, but equipment scandals are frequent in the Forto.

Demographics: Usono is proud of its common European culture and background, and views race and religious differences as irrelevant when all are European. In practice, this refers to European ethnic groups and Christian differences. While there are still a few holdover conflicts and stereotypes about the other states, two generations of Europeans see each other as 'Europeans' first. The Romani have been mostly assimilated after the mid-20th century civil rights movement that argued they are a 'European' race, akin to how the Welsh are an accepted part of Britain but still the butt of low-level prejudice. Jews are a tolerated 'foreign' group predominantly living in their own enclaves: patronised, exoticised, romanticised, and despised at random. About 2% of the population are non-white groups, generally living in the capital and the port cities, tolerated more as long as they're Christian.

Foreign Relations: Primarily isolationist, focused mainly on ensuring protection of goods in (which is why the Komercista Gvardio has the better gear). Usono and its neighbours have mostly come to good terms, with the exception of Metropole: Algiers still worries that Unoso will come for South France one day and Norda Francujo have rather racist paranoia about the Metropole's mostly non-white & mixed race population "conquering them".

Major Parties: Eŭropaj Demokratoj (right-wing); Partio de Laboristoj (socially conservative, pro-municipal and welfare spending); Futurisma Partio (left-wing socially and economically); Semitishe Fartey (traditional Jewish party); Tsiun (progressive Jewish party, aligned with Futurisma)

Armies and armed militias in the United States, ordered by size

THE BIG BOYS
1. Grand Army of the Republic - The standing army of the Union. Under the direct control of the president once again, after many decades of decentralized command to prevent military rule (because that worked so well before). Hasn't been deployed internationally in a decade due to trouble at home. Hard at work combating separatism and partisan strife. Largely seen as a neutral institution compared to its past.
2. American Irish Republican Army - American sect of the Irish Republican Army, although to hear them tell it, they're the main branch and only one with direct lineage to the original Volunteers as well as the Fenian Brotherhood. In its heyday, the A-IRA once claimed to have more members than the entire population of Ireland when including non-armed members and supporters. Still the largest paramilitary in the Union and second job for policemen and firefighters across the nation. Since liberalization and the Century Settlement, no longer involved in regular combat, but still around in solidarity with the oppressed brothers back home and because they're worried the Protestants will fire the first shot. Neutered due to large membership overlap with the Workers Party.
3. Union Gendarmery - Domestic police force of the Union, with a national presence. These days reduced in size due the increasing prevalence of the Grand Army operating at home.
4. Royal New England Constabulary - An international affiliate of the English force of the similar name, formed during the period of Anglo-American cooperation under Buckner to combat the ascendant Irish American bloc due to their support of the homeland Irish. Quickly became the voice of Northern Protestants seeking to combat immigration from the Irish and other ethnic Catholics. Although anti-Irish violence has declined in recent decades, the Constabulary is still a substitute for policing across the Northeast and stands ready in case violence across the pond incites anger at home.
5. New Sons of Liberty - Revolutionary group claiming descent from the 18th century organization that was outlawed in the Buckner era before re-emerging as the armed wing of the nascent Workers Party. Although disbanded after the revolution, the New Sons, third of the name, were formed post-liberalization in order to maintain a socialist militia to withstand governance during liberal periods.
6. Garibaldi Carabinieri - Armed wing of Italian political parties and directly associated with homeland unionist parties and organizations. Will take any orders from the American government as long they don't run against Italian interests. Refuse to fight against the Irish.
7. John Brown's Army - Multiracial coalition for warfare against white nationalist forces, Catholic, Protestant, and God Worshipping. Formed as an abolitionist paramilitary in the 19th century. Many Workers Party functionaries and representatives came from the JBA.
8. Jackson Legion - Legion of internationally recruited mercenaries paid handsomely by old southern elites to defend their interests against "those people."

SPLITTERS AND SYCOPHANTS
9. Minutemen - New England unionist militia sanctioned by state governments to promote unionism and fight against both sectarian armies. Fiercely loyal to federal government.
10. Western Sons of Liberty - Splitters from the News Sons who wanted to build a white enclave in the mountain regions. The primary white nationalist force west of the Mississippi with national reach and wealth, but unable to holdout against the Grand Army for long.
11. Knights of Buckner - Protectors of the lost kingdom. Although the crown and anyone who might claim it are gone, the Knights still remain, composed of direct descendants of the original knights and military aristocrats of the second royal period. Don't really engage in military activity but will use any crisis as an excuse to try to use their political power to advocate a return to military aristocracy.
12. Sons of Moses - Black Christian extremist group who promote racial separatism and the movement of all blacks to Canaan. Strongly against any sort of racial mixing and collaborators with various white nationalist groups.
13. 6 September Movement - The armed wing of the former Communist Party from its outlaw days that still stands as the further left alternative to the Workers Party and associated elements, who they accuse of liberalism.
14. Texas Sovereign Rangers - Texian separatists whose heyday has come and gone. These days just act as support forces for the Jackson Legion in pitched battles.
15. Kansas Jayhawkers - Kansas white socialist militia from slavery days that operates in regions controlled by opposition forces. Only retains nominal presence in Kansas itself.
16. Fraternité Républicaine - French nationalist Ultra Catholic separatists in Canada and the Louisianas who are also tied to the Bourbon monarchy, despite the name. Wield considerable political power and attempt to steer the nation away from Bonapartism.

WHAT EXACTLY IS THE POINT OF YOU?
17. Washington's Own - Anti-monarchist militia formed in Virginia in the Buckner era that advocated the ideals of the War of Independence. With the fall of Buckner, the General's Boys shrunk in size drastically and now only remain as a legacy group and rivals of the Knights.
18. Mujahideen - Extremist Black Islamic fighters with ties to international radical Islamic sects. Primary focus is disrupting the power of the Sons of Moses in black-majority states.
19. Odinguard - White nationalist goons of the Upper Midwest with a Nordic/Vikings aesthetic. Despised by the larger white nationalist Protestant organizations for interfering in their plans.
20. Phoenix Club - Apocalyptic cult attempting to advance the end times by destroying economic and financial institutions, the means of production, and anything that upholds the existing order.
21. 1000 Years - Armed wing of the Church of Tomorrow's Christ, seeking to expel non-Protestants from the United States in order to prepare for Christ's arrival and then invade the world at his command.
22. Judas Cult - Militant antitheists who have moved on from bombing churches to getting arrested all the time because they publish their plans on the Connection for everyone see.
23. Delta Irregulars - Gulf of Mexico pirates that were formed as an irregular regiment in the Warring States era. Bankrolled by European powers to disrupt Union economic control over the Gulf.
24. Green Mountain Boys - Vermont communists who still hang out in their smoking lodges and hunting ranges despite being completely affiliated with the governing Workers Party. Occasionally head north to beat up on the French.

October 18, 2022

United Republicans: My life for Matt Andersen and his commitment to wearing awful light gray suits. Yes, I know we're only talking about this because he was one of the chief negotiators of an awful grain tariff that will raise the price of bread another twenty or thirty percent, but look, levity is where you find it, and I'll take what I can get.

Liberal Party: The current three leading candidates in the online straw poll for leader are Ida Bullock, famously not a member of the Liberal Party or the House of Delegates; Georgia Hynde, who is an excellent musician and activist but is not and has never been an Arapaho citizen or even resident, and "Mike", no last name, who the fuck is "Mike"? Eric Castillo's phone is probably in orbit around now.

Ecological Party: My weekly Leonel Wilderson story is that during my midterm exam I passed by his little invigilator stand thing and saw that he was watching what appeared to be the blooper reel (?) from a documentary about bears on a portable videorecord screen, which explains why he had been badly concealing chuckling noises for the past twenty minutes. Nice dude! Cannot explain why he went into politics!

Women's Equality Party: Sally Strauss, their Critic for Criminal Justice and Legal Affairs, got publicly reprimanded by Russell for saying some mildly positive things about the new housing initiative. On the one hand I feel bad for her, but on the other I can't help but be amused that she somehow didn't realize, despite the fact that the party is led by the longtime consigliere of a former Liberal Presiding Officer, that Women's Equality kind of isn't a real political party so much as a home for anti-Bullock ex-Ecologists not interested in joining the Liberal Party outright.

Patriots' Alliance: The mayor of Scroggins Draw, formerly an Alliance delegate, got caught by the US Marshals running guns to some kind of Arbustista militant group in Salinas, which is (a technical term) super illegal. Wonder whether Fox McCallister will be talking about this as an achievement of her efforts to be "tough on crime".

Social Democratic Party: Their members have collectively decided to engage in a new sport - "how long can we talk about the El Dorado Hospital System 'strike' (it's like ten guys, let's be real) without being so explicit about the fact that it's because evangelical nurses don't want to do abortions that the rest of our coalition disavows our comments?"

National Grange: Technically still "independent", but it looks like the legal battle over the name and former party headquarters/resort is getting close to being resolved, so whatever. All of the eight old Anglo smallholder members will be ecstatic. Maybe the farmworker minimum wage will even get cut another few dollars!

Pike Peak Independents: It's illegal to just read tourism ads into the Official Register of the House of Delegates, right? If not, why not?

Hey, so obviously a lot of the people on this forum are from America, which is cool, but I feel like there ought to be a resource for you to understand British politics before commenting on things you know nothing about.

Let's start with the political parties. These date from the 17th century, and are essentially based on who your family supported in the Civil War (so far, so American), but it's generally turned out that the Whigs, descended from the Parliamentarian/Roundhead side, have held sway. The so-called 'Whig Ascendancy' celebrated its 300th birthday relatively recently, although there have been brief periods of Tory rule in times of great crisis. Traditionally, the Tories represent the English Catholics and the aristocracy while the Whigs represent the Church of England and the middle classes, but this all gets quite amorphous when you consider that anyone wanting a job in Government, the civil service or the media naturally registers as a Whig - you only join the Tories if you can afford to, or you can't afford not to.

Whigs: As I say, this is the broad-tent party of government. After some brief dabblings with a single head of government, the Whigs have landed on a system whereby the state is led by a 'Junto' of five leaders, roughly representing the factional weights within Parliament. The strength of having multiple factions in coalition with each other is that you get to completely change your mind on things (for instance, Keynesian welfarism in the post-Emergency period transitioning to neowhiggism in the 1980s) and still claim that it's all part of a single broad tradition.
Johnsonite Whigs: An amorphous collection of personalist followers of Boris 'the Mechanical Turk' Johnson. It is very difficult to pin them down on any ideological content bar a slight shade of nationalism and a tendency to conservative economics - although they are in the process of renationalising the railways.
Cameronite Whigs: David Cameron attracted much of the former 'Blairite' group of vaguely progressive-sounding authoritarians with a tendency to sell themselves as managerially competent, despite doing their best to avoid actually managing anything. These people gave independence to the Bank of England and the Royal Mail, which are now much less profitable than they were. Presumably due to not being managed by the Blairite/Cameronite Men In Suits. These have been on a downswing for the last 5-10 years.
Radical Whigs: The most long-lived Whig faction and the most ideologically coherent, these are secularist liberals with a social conscience, but not enough of one to tear up any of the complicated electoral agreements they have with the less forward-thinking Whig factions. They don't rally round a single leader, which is probably wise since Jess Phillips is the best they can come up with. Their latest pamphlet explains that the term 'rotten borough' is ableist somehow.
Mayite Whigs: Known jocularly as 'the Church of England at prayer', they're more complicated than American Christian politicians due to the national nature of the Church. They're coming round to the progressive view on the sterilisation of freemartins because it pisses off the feminists, and when Justin Welby condemns usury he does it from a radical-left perspective.
Trotskyite Whigs: A splinter of the Communist Party which pursues an 'open entryist' strategy, they are in fact some of the heartiest supporters of whoever's in charge at the moment.

Tories: Back in the old days they were monarchical ultra-conservatives, but their alignment to Catholic interests has given them strength in radical cities like Liverpool and Glasgow, and frequently the 'noblesse oblige' instincts (and pure-and-simple vote-hunger) of the party clubbables leads them to be more generous than the Whigs, who don't fee obliged to anyone for their divinely ordained centuries of success.
Rees-Moggite Tories: The old school Tories of yesteryear, despite the fact that their leader is from a family that doesn't date to before Cardinal Newman, either in its Catholicism or its money. The last time this lot were in power was the 1940s, but everyone prefers not to bring this up. They're slipping in the English shires, but have a stranglehold over Ireland.
Corbynite Tories: The growth industry in Toryism for the last half-decade or so. This axis, appealing to Irish Catholic and English non-conformist alike, brings together everyone who aligns with the Tories because they just like to pretend to be above the corruption of the Whig Elite. Lots of support in the radical youth, but it seems to disappear at every election when everyone realises that they might accidentally put Rees-Mogg in power.
Cruddasite Tories: Another lefty sector - this time fixating on the Catholic working classes. The spiritual successor to the old Chestertonites.
Jacobite Tories: Officially proscribed due to their treasonous manifestos, but the Jacobites' proxies are increasingly successful in Scottish constituencies. Ideologically diffuse, except for an assumption that an independent Scotland under an absolute monarchy would somehow be good.

Communists: Much like an American party in that they are membership-based rather than directed from an ever-shifting parliamentary cadre - but unlike an American party in that they are at least notionally left-wing. In reality, though, they've only remained a parliamentary third party for this long thanks to the fact that all of their supporters are entirely obsessed with doorknocking and leaflets about potholes, to the exclusion of anything that could actually be described as 'policy'.

THE ELITES ARE USING CLONING AGAINST US: A WARNING FROM THE AUGMENTATION RATIONAL CONCERN GROUP

On this day, three years ago, we were reminded how the professional politicians of the United States have learnt how to use their wicked ways against the most sacred thing of all: the God-given fact that when a man dies, he STAYS DEAD. This cyber-letter last covered Lyndon Johnson on that day, when the Socialist politician was at last taken by Clone Rot, the Lord's punishment against those who choose to not take their fate as he sees fit. Lyndon Johnson was a poor boy from Texas who entered politics as a aid to good Conservative Richard Kleberg, but he had dark ambitions to take over the country. With the assistance of the USSR-backed AFL-CIO, he was elected as a Congressman, where he backed President Roosevelt's New Deal policies, against the beliefs of his Austin constituency.

He then turned his eyes to the US Senate, one of democracy's most beloved institutions, with the intention to change it into a tool of SOCIALISM. Fortunately, the Japanese took his life during an observation mission when he was being flown over the Pacific by our troops. However, the US Government had other plans, and recreated Lyndon Johnson. The AGGIE version of Johnson then served as US Senator, before the people of Texas saw through it's socialist plot, and elected former Governor W. Lee O'Daniel to replace him. It then served as a liberal lobbyist, before being tapped as President Eisenhower's choice for the blasphemous Department for Augmented People's Affairs. In this role, it banned justice against anti-godly cloning measures.

O LORD, send holy assistance against godless men such as he. Strike the unholy creations of Man down.

Something tells me Aggie Lyndon B. Johnson was very unlike his prototype in personality
having read robert caro's texas adventure, i didn't intend that to be what to take out of it: the main idea is that after LBJ got cloned, the hard-conservative texas oilman economic support he had gotten before had completely fallen off, so he got outspent by Pappy O'Daniel

oof, understandable

but still, that's got to be a pretty significant issue with clones

why do oilmen hate clones so much, anyway?
