Quick question @Yokai Man

Any idea how you could have Romania become a stable Liberal Democracy somewhere between 1930 to 2000?
HAHAHAHAHAHA no.

Even if somehow Carol II doesn’t become King and the Iron Guard gets dealt with properly, there’s still the problem of Germany/the Soviet Union. One way or the other Romania becoming a dictatorship just becomes inevitable.

In order for that to happen, you need a POD starting from the 1700’s at the very least. And good luck trying to find one.

Bugger, hmm.

Anyway for Romania to be a less crazy Soviet state allowing for a less aggressively awful return to democracy?

Ceaucescu dies in an aviatic accident like he nearly did in 1957,leading to Gheorghe Apostol or Emil Bondaras becoming Secretary General.

That doesn’t mean mind you that things would change for the better per se.It would be basically a slightly lighter version of the Ceaucescu years that would still result in the party and Securitate apparatus being in control of society after 1989. You would however get different people in charge of FSN,since Iliescu’s rise is tied to that of Ceaucescu.Without him,he doesn’t get to become a member of the Central Committee and be politically important, leading to either Roman or Mănescu as the authoritarian political figure that dominates post Communist Romanian society.

The only real differences they would make would be ones regarding the economy, especially Roman as it was only main ideological difference between him and Iliescu. He was slightly more economically liberal,Iliescu was more economically conservative. That’s it-things would be different, but only in terms of the economy at best.Roman or Mănescu would just offer the same corruption, populism and authoritarianism that Iliescu offered, but packaged differently.

Actually, one of the few scenarios where Romania becomes less horrible politically would be one where Operation Unthinkable happens, the Soviet Union disbands and the Iron Curtain never actually happens, leading to Iuliu Maniu becoming PM and being a Eden/Macmillan like figure that eventually establishes the post war wealth fare state and Romania becomes more similar to,say,Italy.

Not perfect but that’s the best that could happen for Romania all things considered.

There were plans for a NW Devo ref as well as Yorkshire if the NE had gone through.

Also, the concept of the Lib Dems crawling forward as the default opposition and lots of minnows sounds interesting. Though I'd have thought the Greens would be doing better by becoming the left wing opposition option.

Livingstone sorta negated that, though the Greens have the possibility to become that after the various scandals surrounding him and his MPs.

It would be a little harder however, given that one of the Green MPs is,well, tied somehow to Mister Tony Blair.

Further proof that Romania never progressed from 2003. Jokingly aside, is this real?
Oh yes.

It’s from the splinter party that formed from PP-DD due to Constantin Cojocaru not being happy that Dan Diaconescu only promised to give 20 thousand Euros to every Romanian instead of 500 thousand and also because he stole some of his ideas and took credit from them.

PP-DD btw is the acronym for People’s Party-Dan Diaconescu, the name being chosen after Cojocaru registered his party-People’s Party-Cojocaru Law-slightly earlier and thus Diaconescu couldn’t register his far left/far right populist as just the People’s Party.

One of these days I oughta talk about PP-DD’s absolutely mental manifesto promises.

Only ever in Romania would you able to say a Party is both Far Left and Far Right.

Also this whole this is so fucking weird, it feels like a parody.

Oh please do, I suspect there balanced and reasonable proposals.
