Which European monarchies do you still see eventually getting abolished without the World Wars?

-Iceland: Voted to break the Personal Union with Denmark by 98%.

"Okay, guys, that's forty-nine votes for breaking personal union, one against!

"I take it that was you, Geirarður Húnason?

"Yeah, just being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian, huh? Hehe!

"No worries, we all love you!

"Anyway, that settles it: Iceland hereby declares independence!

"I'd give some nice eloquent speech about all men being created equal, but, well, that fish won't catch itself, ladies and gentlemen! I've got to get back to work, as you probably do too!

"Oh, yeah, and I'd like to thank Sigurgrímur Bjartþórsson for allowing all of us, the entire population of Iceland, to use his home for this historical vote!

"...And his lovely wife Ketilríður for the very tasty hákarl she made for us all.

"Anyway, that should wrap this up!

"I'll mail our decision to Copenhagen on my way back home!"

I thinking ending the PU by mail might have difficult considering the number of heavily armed and belligerent Germans in Copenhagen at the time.

They literally did do that however. The agreement in 1920 had been that Iceland would be in PU for 20 years then could vote on whether to continue. There were some in Denmark upset about them deciding to still have the vote when they were occupied, but the King basically went 'no, completely fair' and it never amounted to much.

Christian X was one stone-cold mofo.

I'd actually be curious as to what the odds are of Hungary deciding to toss away the Crown of Saint Stephen and declare a republic if/when the Habsburg Empire disintegrates. As far as I understand the political situation of the country in 1914, most governance was in the hands of the aristocracy, which over the years had become both more reactionary and nationalist, hence why Hungary was so heavy-handed in promoting Magyarisation. Assuming that these are the forces who Franz Joseph's successor, be it Franz Ferdinand, Blessed Karl, or anybody else would be facing against for the future of Central Europe and the Balkans, the odds of a Hungarian republic without a world war to legitimise the liberals and socialists seems slim.

Which then prompts the discussion of who would be the monarch of an independent Kingdom of Hungary. I find it unlikely that an Eternal Regency a la Horthy would occur, considering that the Admiral rose to that position in exceptional circumstances due to his command over the White Hungarian forces. As for the odds of whether a Habsburg would be crowned, it would probably be unlikely assuming the breakup happens violently, which is also the likeliest scenario. But just who else is there to even make King in the first place? Picking some random noble to step up to the task sounds like a recipe for disaster, and there'd probably a huge mess over claims to legitimacy. Indeed, the last time a noble had been crowned King, it had led to the darkest centuries of Hungarian history.
