What does “ignore” do exactly?

Yesterday, for the first time either here on AH.com, I placed someone or on “Ignore” (No, it’s not you if you are reading this). A couple hours later I suddenly started wondering, what exactly does it mean to put someone on ignore? I know that I no longer see their posts, but do I see the posts of people who reply to them? Do I see the reply posts without the quotation? Could I potentially get a PM from the person that I put on ignore? Does the other person know that I put them on ignore?

Sort of curious.

You can't see the ignored member's posts but you can still see people answering to these, just not the quotations (which sometimes makes the conversation weird-looking until you realize what happens). As for PM, I don't know.
