An Alternate Canadian Flag
What if John Diefenbaker returned to power after a far more acrimonious Flag Debate led him to reveal that Pearson was named as a communist in the McCarthy hearings and bit deep into growing corruption scandals, and Pearson had no time to implement a new flag before being defeated.

Then Diefenbaker had to commit to a new flag nevertheless because he pledged to 'acknowledge both founding nations' on the flag, as he and the anti-Maple Leaf Flag people did so in OTL, in an attempt to make their cause sound less Anglocentric?

Well...

Perfectly cursed, love it. I recall seeing a historic newspaper cartoon of John A. Macdonald crafting a British ensign-style flag with both a French tricolor and the fleur-de-lis to accuse him of being overly partial to Francophone interests (for the life of me I can’t find it again though), this reminds me of that.

Honestly, I like it more than I would've expected. I don't just mean because of the symbolism, I mean I scrolled past it without processing what it was and thought "I like that design". Which is odd when it's so busy.

Of course there is that weird thing where I think 'officially' the Canadian flag was implemented with small Union Jack and fleur-de-lys flags in the top left and right corners, but just...nobody actually flies that version? Not sure of the details.

That was simply one of the three finalists (along with the Pearson Pennant and the one that got selected), and it was pushed as a compromise.

Utopia in the Rodina: Natalia Tarkovskaya
2560x_75.webp

Winona Ryder
Name: Natalia Alexandrovna Tarkovskaya / Наталия Александровна Тарковская
Gender: Female
Date of Birth/Age: 14 August 1979 (54 years old)
Ethnicity: Russian
Religion: Atheist
Home Federal Subject: St. Petersburg
Party Affiliation: People's Solidarity Coalition "Roza" / Union of the Democratic Left

List of Previous Offices Held:
Member of the St. Petersburg City Council (2002-2005)
Member of the Federal Duma (2005-2010, 2018-present)
Chief Whip of the Union of the Democratic Left (2027-present)

Biography: Everyone who is familiar with Russian politics knows of Natalia Tarkovskaya. The autistic lesbian heir to Antonina Melnik’s reformist legacy, she is in many ways the glue keeping the SDL together. Not by gladhanding, that was Lukyanova’s job and that has been more or less taken up by others. But by ensuring that every internal process was greased up, that every Duma member was sufficiently briefed, that any leaks were traced back to their source and dealt with, you name it, she has dealt with it. Her constituency has always been preferred for funding (turns out she has quite a few contacts in Rodina…), and even as it turned from a working-class neighbourhood to a firmly middle-class one, they still faithfully vote SDL. Well, apart from that moment in the 2010s, but after a second try, she got back in.

Does she have a legacy of her own? Well into her 50s, this is a natural question to ask. Lukyanova firmly led the SDL until her death, and Tarkovskaya was her faithful functionary while pushing back against lingering Old Guard resistance. She is Melnik’s heir and one of the seniormost figures in SDL. But as her long-distance girlfriend Julia pointedly asks her, when will she step out of the shadows and assert her own legacy? When she does, Natalia just shuts down and the conversation has to move quickly away from that. But it does have to be said.

She lives an unconventional life, being in an apartment at her age, her partner lives far away in Brazil (her homeland), her sisters are still shockingly influential in the corporate world (even in the 2030s, those families who grew rich in the 1990s are rich still) and her life is full of politics. As she scarfs down paninis for quick lunches before returning to her office, we have to admit one thing. This life of hers, strange as it is, works for her.

But change always comes. As Russia’s politics shift, will Tarkovskaya end up finally realising a legacy of her own? Or will this be all it is?
Government Spending
Leftist: Believes in a state with both high spending and high taxation, inspired by the Nordic model, and with a focus on taxing the wealthy.

Democracy (How does your character view Russian democracy?)

Democrat: Is someone who believes in the value of liberal democracy. They believe that the popular will must be respected, but also tempered by respect for human rights and freedoms.

Balance of Powers (While the constitution envisioned a parliamentary republic, inaugural President Scriabin significantly strengthened both the power and prestige of the office, and at the moment Russia operates under a de facto semi-presidential system.)

A Parliamentarian supports the legislature and believes that more power should be given to them and the Prime Minister, including greater control over the security apparatus and foreign policy.

Artificial Intelligence (With the rise of AI disrupting many industries, including the automotive and office sectors, stances sharply divide on how to deal with this new norm of society.)

Regulatory Proponent: Views AI as a tool that can ultimately help society, but at this stage of development needs a firm guiding hand from the government to regulate its progress. (Varies on mileage depending on your stance.)

Corruption and Drug Use

A Pragmatist
is fine with prison sentences, but acknowledges that the current system on corruption is already putting a burden on the nation. May support use of drugs in certain medical areas.

Homosexuality

A Reformist believes that a consistent human rights policy includes greater freedoms for the LGBT community, mainly related to self-expression and the discussion of their experiences.

Foreign Policy

Nationalist:
Nationalists love Russia, and believes it’s a country worthy of power and deference. However, they also view isolation as a negative and work to foster bilateral alliances with other countries, particularly India.

In Place of Strife
Recognising the issues a possible return of the conflict associated with ‘dual power’ may have on the unity of the republican cause, the Provisional Government and Petrograd Soviet have unanimously agreed to the compromise set forth here.

There will be elections to a Constituent Assembly, as promised before by far more dishonourable men, and it will be structured as forth:
  • There will be multi-member constituencies matching the established soviets, with the seat distribution reflecting the membership size of each soviet. The soviet councils do not appoint the delegates to the Constituent Assembly, it is to be decided by the workers themselves by a proportional system (with an emphasis on the right of recall at any time of any delegate by a simple majority of the workers of the soviet).
  • Reflecting on the limited extent of soviets in our Russia, there will also be establishment of ‘functional’ constituencies (i.e. constituencies determined by employment) in which those in gainful employment but not sovietised will be able to vote in. If any of those prove unwieldy in size, geographical boundaries will be employed as a last resort.
  • While the functional constituencies will receive ample allocation and their voice decidedly heard, it will be made clear that soviet constituencies will receive more seats on the whole compared to their electorate. This is intended to encourage the sovietisation of the middle-class.
The Constituent Assembly’s functions are set forth below:
  • It will be declared the ‘supreme soviet’ of Russia, and therefore take over from the Petrograd Soviet its unofficial role as leader of all soviets in Russia. This will be emphasised as in no way a centralisation of any power from the soviets to some sort of new Duma. The Assembly is the soviet of soviets and assumes charge of matters so large Russia cannot devolve to a soviet level, matters already in the hands of the Provisional Government and Petrograd Soviet as is.
  • The Constituent Assembly will appoint a Government Committee (Pravkom), the legal successor of the Provisional Government and Executive Committee. It will be empowered with all the general duties one would expect of a government.
  • All factions of the Constituent Assembly will be guaranteed at least one seat in the Pravkom, but the Pravkom will be empowered to decide on matters of portfolio to allocate to the Pravkom members.
  • Helming the Pravkom will be the Minister-Chairman (preserving the old Prov-Gov name) and under him will be Ministers with allocated portfolios, as per the old Provisional Government structure.
It is hoped that this compromise structure, which preserves everything good and true about the old Provisional Government and Ispolkom, will end any nonsense of ‘dual power’ and renew the cause of Russian republicanism and what unites us, not divide us.

More of the Tibbyworld, aka the universe where I somehow become Prime Minister in the 2040s Despite Everything.

Five reasons why our Prime Minister is so odd (and why we love her anyway)

5: She's a Welsh nationalist, somehow.

One may say that it is contradictory for someone to be Prime Minister of Britain and be a self-identified Welsh nationalist. Not our Prime Minister. She went on BBC Wales about a year before her surprise victory and elaborated her view of Wales - "I'm Welsh and I won't deny that. I love Wales. I want Wales to be secure and prosperous. Nationalism is such an odd label, and I do think separatism is deeply unadvised, but if loving Wales and wanting it to be great is nationalist, then I'm a nationalist for Wales. Like I am for Britain, the two are not contradictory."

4: Her disturbing levels of honesty.
The four PMs before her were all chronic liars who ended up being thrown out for being caught in their lies. While our PM can often be forgetful (she says she has a notepad for all important details), she doesn't hide anything from the public. There was that one rag that tried to attack her for something long in her past, something related to her transness, and she gave that speech. After what she said in that speech, no one can really say she consciously lies to the public. The greatest complaint from the backbenchers is that she's too honest. Which is bizarre.

3: She makes those "praise speeches".
Britain is by its nature a fairly melancholic country. Often PMs tries to rouse us up by highlighting big stuff they're doing for the country. Our current PM does those too, but she also does hour-long speeches that are just filled with good news with no mention of her policies. There's just something about having the Prime Minister talk of the country doing something, and then just going "that's a great thing we're doing". The stuff she chooses to highlight are often non-political - she highlights various charities and name-drops "exceptional Britons", but never mentions her policies. Very odd. When people ask her why she makes those speeches, she replies "Sometimes Britain needs to be reminded of all the good news happening."

2: Her "Blue Letters".
Go back ten years, no one could tell you what a "Blue Letter" is, and now everyone knows, much to the Prime Minister's slight discomfort. Apparently our Prime Minister prizes herself on personal communication, and every time there's a major tragedy, our PM writes a letter to the survivors or the family, and invites them to respond to her. She personally types up the letter herself, it seems. The last PM to do something like that was Gordon Brown (Labour, 2007-2010, primarily known for the recession) when he wrote to the family of those who died in the Middle Eastern wars. They're "Blue Letters" because she puts them in blue envelopes for some reason unknown to anyone but herself.

1: Her antlers.
While yes, bioengineering is routine those days and you see more people than before visibly augmented, it has to be admitted that our PM is the highest-ranking world leader with visible augments, namely her antlers. They are quite impressive, one has to admit, and has become her symbol, like how Thatcher had her handbag or Bieda her short-sleeves. At this point, antler headpieces sell far more on Halloween than Christmas as some people inexplicably decide to go to parties dressed as the Prime Minister.

The Business of Ruling: Avrora, Iolanta and Olena Chayka New
4099E40F00000578-0-image-a-5_1495373738586.jpg

Mary Bloxham, Margaret Coleman and Georgina Leech
Name: Avrora Antonivna Chayka / Iolanta Antonivna Chayka / Olena Antonivna Chayka
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Half-Russian, half-Ukrainian
Religion: At this point, atheist [much to their mother's irritation]
Faction: "Pro-Moscow". Likely will end up Menshevik at this point, they're far more politicised than their father ever was.
List of Occupations and Offices Held: Avrora was her father's secretary and the three know names, but that's it.
Personality:
- Avrora: Quiet, often too quiet, looking around for information all the time. Deeply embittered by her father's death.
- Iolanta: The one who gladhands and understands, at a certain level, people. Deeply shocked by her father's death.
- Olena: The imaginative one who comes up with the madcap plans. Deeply affected by her father's death.
Other Pertinent Information: Their mother, Yekaterina Aleksandrovna Sokolov, is also in Moscow. She has started drinking heavily.
Biography: Tragedy has always followed Avrora, Iolanta and Olena. From their uncles' madness to their father's deeply-repressed trauma and then sudden death and then their mother's deep alcoholism. The sisters Chayka have always been of far more hardy stock than other girls would have been, and upon being told by their scouting bodyguard Fyodor of their father's death, Avrora looked up at him with those cold, icy eyes and told him to leave. She had to console Olena, but then start making plans. Plans to continue their father's legacy.

They are very much ready for what comes next.

The Civil War -
2, All power to the Soviet!
: The duplicity of the Gannibal regime has been shown with his attempted massacre in Petrograd! Rally to the Soviet's defense and fight back the Gannibal reaction! The revolution of February will never be forgotten! Let's do milquetoast reform!

National Self-Determination -
2, Free Autonomism:
Each group of people have a right to govern themselves, although not necessarily by themselves. Why not total independence you ask? Well, it would make me cry.

Land Reform -
1, Land Socialization
: Make everyone set up communal farms and they can run it and all that fun stuff. Land back to the people and all that. What do you mean you can't democratically force everyone onto collectivized farms? Just shut up, we've been trying to do this for like 4 decades at this point. Just let us Nardoniks win once.

You're either very serious about this or intend to control the Soviets 'for the sake of the revolution' later on a la Comrade Lenin.

The Business of Ruling: Keit Tsahkna New
782px-Bernadette_Cattan%C3%A9o_en_1929_%C3%A0_Moscou.jpg

Bernadette Cattanéo
Name: Keit Tsahkna
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Estonian
Religion: Atheist
Faction: Anarchist
List of Occupations and Offices Held: Involved in the anarchist organisations, also a mechanic specialising in motorbikes.
Personality: One can't say that Keit Tsahkna cares much for what most people thinks of her. She has always been in a way defiant of society, and sees the revolution as liberating. She does however, care quite a lot about what people who she cares about think of her. She is, below all the "fuck society, fuck it all" talk a fairly caring person. She's not an anarchist for the "fuck rules", she's an anarchist for the whole "everyone helps everyone else" bit.
Other Pertinent Information: Is somehow the partner of the three Chayka sisters after quite a few misunderstandings.
Biography: The most precious thing anyone can have is their freedom. Why should it be relinquished? This is what Keit Tsahkna asks herself and others. Just exactly why do people do it? She's not some philosopher who writes extensively of what an anarchist society is about (she finds those people bores), she's just someone who goes "why do we need all those rules?". A noted lesbian, she has found that fellow anarchist women are broadly the most likely to be lesbians, but then she somehow picked up a very mood-swingy Trudovik of all things a few months ago. After a misunderstanding, it was cleared up that she somehow got into a relationship with three sisters without realising it [and she did have a talk with them about, well, clear communication!]. Nevertheless, she's fine being poly, and makes sure to afford each of them equal love and attention.

She is now currently dealing with the emotional impact of the death of Anton Chayka on his daughters. Truth be told, she thought him a bit of a suspect revisionist, but currently won't hear a word against someone killed by the Whites [and who his daughters won't hear a word against].

Skills:
Charisma - 3 [Keit Tsahkna can make quite a decent speech, but not as good as Markova]
Organizing - 4 [Anarchism is not one without organisation, it is one without the state. Tsahkna knows this very well]
Generalship - 1 [She has a pistol in her leather jacket ready in case, but that is all she knows of military matters]
Subterfuge - 2 [Our mechanic can be sneaky sometimes, but it is not a skill she particularly knows well]

The Civil War -
1, Revolution Now
: While opposing the White Reaction is paramount, the Petrograd Soviet's policy thus far has been moderate. Too moderate. For all the talk about land reform and power to the Soviets they have no interest in promoting true socialism. Let's shoot kulaks!

National Self-Determination -
1, Freedom to the Peoples:
All of the people of the former Russian Empire have a right to be free and independent - as long as they're socialist and don't interfere with our present foreign policy goals. It's okay we can forcibly teach them about our particular branch of socialism later.
