Book cover for a book about Orientale- Orientale, the largest manmade structure ever built, is a vast dome stretching almost a hundred kilometers above the lunar surface and stretching almost a thousand kilometers across. Originally built as spacer-martian relations started souring in the year 2470/412 in an effort to build a habitat capable of housing the inevitable teeming masses of the future, it was completed just over a hundred-twenty years ago in 2518/472. Orientale hosts a total of 30 million people. It also hosts the capital of Bayujsen, Nazpurseke, on the largest island in the dome.
The medium that the book is intended to be viewed on is effectively a tablet, so depending on the day the image changes. This is Orientale at night, depending on the calendar day: Everywhere in the human domain operates on the Martian Calendar, which defines a second as roughly 1.032 SI seconds. This means its 64 (100)-second minutes, 56 (70)-minute hours, and 24 (30)-hour days last about 88.8 kiloseconds, the length of a Martian day. A Martian year is approximately 668.5991 Martian days. To keep time with Mars' years, every five years is divided into a two-cycle and a one-cycle. The name tells how many years it is in between years with 668 days- (669, 669, 668), (669, 668). This averages out to 668.6 days per year, off by .009. To achieve accuracy to 668.599, every 999th (1747th) year has to lose a day. The first of these days has not been reached yet. Of course, in the Martian calendar each year is either 1234 or 1235 days long- which facilitates their month system. The Bayujsen month system uses 20 (24) months, using a system where the first 6 months are of 33 (41) days, the next 8 (10) months are of 34 (42) days, and the final 6 months are of 33 days. [Numbers are in base-10 unless in parentheses or otherwise stated.]
Closely related is this map of the inhabited portion of Solsys, showcasing the three-and-a-half nations of the human domain. Mars is not owned by any nation, as the three starstates look back on the past and see ownership of a wholly-habitable world as a catalyst to planet-ruining war. As such, the nations draw from Mars' population to man their habs and ships- but Mars' relatively-prosperous farms are the place to go when one retires. [Original map by uh Serafim.]
