this is sick Mep, do you have any conception of what the electoral map would look like in 1940 compared to 1956 and 1980?

only 1940 and 1980, for the time being

1940:

fmr. Gov. Floyd Olson of MN / U.S. Sen. Bronson Cutting of NM (Farmer-Labor)
aviator Charles Lindbergh of NJ / Rep. Hamilton Fish III of NY (Republican)
U.S. Amb. to the U.K. Lewis W. Douglas of AZ / fmr. Gov. Paul V. McNutt of IN (Democratic)
U.S. Sen. Huey P. Long of LA / Rep. William Lemke of ND (Reform)
fmr. Gov. Dan Moody of TX / various ("Texas Regular" Democratic)

1980 (give or take Illinois and Alabama):

Pres. Bronson La Follette of WI / Vice Pres. Frank Church of ID (Farmer-Labor)
ret. Adm. James E. Carter of GA / Rep. John B. Anderson of IL (Unionist)
Rep. Larry McDonald of GA / fmr. Rep. Tony Imperiale of NJ (Liberty and Democracy)

honestly I wonder if Philip Fox La Follette would have worked better for this scenario

strange local Russian news №1?1: on January 5, 2024 in Rybinsk, Yaroslavl Oblast, a 24 year old CPRF member got beaten up and pepper sprayed by neo-Nazis for participating in CPRF party activities (warning y'all that the article contains images of beatings, as is perhaps necessary).

I came across this article mostly by accident while looking up info on the Rotenbergs allegedly sponsoring an irregular formation made up of football ultras (named, somewhat ironically, Española); incidentally, one of their members, a neo-Nazi by the name of Vyacheslav Subbotin, died this March, not long after reportedly organizing a seedy neo-Nazi concert in a seedy Moscow bar in celebration of Alexei Navalny's death.

Морали не будет, as they say, but this is probably one of the more obvious-in-hindsight and inevitable consequences of Pynya's decision to deepen the stupid meatgrinder that has been going on since 2014 - the reactivization of neo-Nazis that have prowled the streets in 2000s and were partially suppressed for a while during the 2010s. Not sure whether this'll lead to anything really transformative, but if 2000s are any indication teenagers and foreigners getting glassed and/or shot will be a part of it. It's not like the Russo-Ukrainian War hasn't been leaking lead.

Jesus, if this is a return of the 2000s Nazi gangs, I shudder at what the 2000s was like. It seems like the rise of fascist hooligans in other parts of Europe has absolutely not spared Russia.

I read a recent article on Jacobin (which yes I know has problematic people and articles, but this one is good) that noted on how the Russian government is recently pivoting to more UAE style greenwashing from outright climate denial. It mentioned that like in many other sectors, large parts of Russia's "climate plan" involves outsourcing to SEZs in a manner of "eh the SEZs will figure it out" (China is different in that it doesnt purley rely on SEZs, but SEZs were used as a conduit to gather trade and more crucially, knowledge and skill that could be learned for their own workers). And it reminded me so much on the very outsource-y nature of this war of the multitudes of private armies of large oligarchs (idk if the regular army conscripting from the rural areas count as outsourcing since its a common occurrence in other parts of history). Russia is often seen as this big authority on top of a country like the olden days in many places like America, but I think the cases of the PMCs and SEZs shows how much it can be a collection of interest groups banded together by one powerful arbiter. One is tempted to point to the Old Republic of China.

It was certainly A Decade. Substantial economic growth and relative calm (particularly in the later years), but also the Second Chechen War, with the destruction that implies, and frequent neo-Nazi vs. antifa street fights/murders further fueled by procurement of weapons used in the Chechen Wars. The murder of Markelov and Baburova is the most notable example of this development, but neo-Nazis also did things like bombing the Cherkizovsky market.

I'm pretty sure that is in fact the norm.

Honestly I can't say I'm particularly familiar with the article, or how SEZs are connected with climate crisis denial (I'll admit that the two Russian SEZs is know of are in Kaliningrad and Yelabuga), but maybe I just haven't come across enough news or recent statements to be concerned with on the matter.

Just to clarify, if Sova (the pre-eminent analytical center of nationalist activities and xenophobia in Russia) is to be believed, the number of racist/xenophobic attacks rose by almost two thirds in 2023 compared to the previous five years, almost reaching late 2000s-2010s levels. Some limitations of the analysis provided by Sova should be acknowledged, like lack of sufficient data on the Northern Caucasus because of the wide range of nationalities represented there as well as the relative opaqueness of local governments; Sova did note, however, a surge in neo-Nazis filming and publishing their own actions en masse.

"died in a car crash in 1922" is easily top ten most embarrassing ways to go out. getting hit by a Model T going .6 miles per hour... ur not going to Heaven if that happens to you as an American politician.
Probably accidentally drove off a bridge or something.
Well, not exactly "hit by a Model T going .6 miles per hour", but the one weird site I found that described it in detail states the following:
cascapedia.com/old-friends said:
Lucio Mintzer was involved in a similar tragedy just seven years later on September 4, 1922, when driving on the Fairfax-Bolinas Road in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. Blinded by the glare of oncoming headlights, Mintzer ran his car off the road where it turned over several times, pinning both Mintzer and his passenger, Theodore Arlington Bell (left), beneath the car. Once again, Mintzer suffered only a fractured arm, but Bell, a well-known politician and attorney was killed instantly.

Though New York Times doesn't exactly make it look any more dignified, given the headline:
1711842538591.png

Honestly, I feel like the more embarrassing thing about Bell is that the first time he ran for Governor of California he was in excellent conditions for a victory - the popular Republican governor being replaced by a guy with strong Southern Pacific Railroad ties and all. The only reason Bell lost (and contributed to California's streak of electing Republican* governors for forty years) is William Randolph Hearst.

The only reason I even made this list is because I remembered that I wanted to make him President for one of your collab lists.

Honestly speaking I don't have that many ideas for infoboxes or other graphics and it rather pains me as of lately, given that this thread is in Graphics and not Writing. The weather doesn't really help either.

I understand this, it’s frustrating when you can’t get your way when being creative. Generally I would say, try and do a bit of writing (I know that it’s entirely the point of the thread, but it will help generate ideas).

Also reading and all that may help.
