America still hasn’t overcome the shock of self-proclaimed Anti-statist “Bro” Jackson’s victory last Tuesday in the 2060 Presidential election. The country known for its left-wing politics and the dominance of Democratic-Socialist party elected the former Congressman from North Carolina over Minnesota Senator Isra Hirsi, the first Muslim woman to appear on a major party ticket. While outgoing Jon Ossoff stated that he’s looking forward to meeting the president-elect, other members of the Democratic-Socialists are far less excited about the upcoming presidency of the man who once advocated for the dissolution of the United States and who spoke at an assembly of post-left anarchist protest groups. Some have even advocated for the refusal to seat the Maine native, but no prior precedent exists to such a move and the 51% of the vote that he received is a clear majority.

President-elect Jackson decries what he describes as a smear campaign against his character and stated that “we are fucking done with Marxism, the state dictating everything we do, and the pointless War against Fascism in Russia”. Such talking points have made him especially popular among young voters. Voters aged 16-21 broke 80-18 for Jackson, while down-ballot Republicans barely got 60%. This is a still a massive feat however for the Republican party, which has increasingly become the party of young voters and shied away from ideologies like conservatism and Trumpism, that were dominant in the party during the 2020s and 2030s especially. The changing of the party coalitions can also be seen down-ballot as Jackson became the first Republican to win the state of Douglas and the first to win the election without winning the State of Utah since the 19th century. Many older Democratic-Socialist voters are still afraid that he’ll bring back the days of Trump and to a lesser extent John James. Millennial- and Gen Z- voters both voted for Senator Hirsi by more than 10%.

The VP-elect is even more unpopular among older voters however. The Vermont governor is even more radical than their boss. They not only is an anti-Statist, but also an outright Anarchist. 000-00-0000 (birth name Florence Mackey) refuses to take the oath of office as they does not consider themselve an American. While some Democratic-Socialists state that this means they cannot officially become the VP, 000-00-0000 disagrees with them and points out that the oath of office is strictly a tradition and not something that they actually has to take in order to become Vice-President. They also refuses to live in the Federal Strict during their vice-presidency and as an Agrarian instead wants to represent America’s rural population by living in a different rural county every 3 months. This move is especially popular among younger voters, which have become increasingly disillusioned with urban metropoles and prefer the isolation and communalism that is more present in Rural America.

Prime-Minister Aldridge of the Commonwealth of Great Britain and European Federation President Murat Onay have congratulated the president-elect and stated that they hope that the United States will continue to be a partner in the war against fascism in Russia and in the promotion of human rights, but neither showed enthusiasm in their message to the president-elect. Other national leaders of American allies like Aztlan, Israel-Palestine, New Zealand and Kurdistan had much more worried reactions to the results of the 2060 US election. Either way it will be interesting to see whether the Democratic-Socialist Senate will pass Jackson’s more radical proposals.

Somewhat implausible but a TL where David Duke wins all the races he runs for. Headcanon for this is Iran-Contra going belly up and a recession-laden Jesse Jackson presidency heavily radicalizing the GOP base so much so that Duke gets about 30% of the vote in the next presidential election.

These are the kind of reactions I was after. I basically wanted to create a scenario where the radicals of today are the establishment of 40 years later. Kind of like Reagan in 1980 and 2020. Of course socialism is a lot more based than Reaganomics, so I had to get a bit creative. Basically by 2060 America is a radically social democratic country that verges on being state capitalist at times. Either way you do not want to be on the bad side of the federal government as it can make your life a living hell. Economic growth is below 1%, there’s an endless wars against fascism in Russia, the government is more powerful than ever and unions are getting corrupter. Starting a small business is pretty much impossible and the jobs offered by the government and corporations aren’t as good as they once were. Either way a nation where the dominant party’s president gets primaried due to him being considered too right-wing because he identifies only as a socialist and not also as a ‘Marxist’ and ‘anti-capitalist’.

The Republicans spend most of the century in the wilderness as the Trump presidency caused them even more problems than Hoover’s did. Biden was still somewhat moderate, but during Kamala and especially AOC’s presidency the Democrats took more and more steps to lock the Republicans out of power as their continued flirtations with fascism left them worried. John James barely won the House and the popular vote (which had replaced the Electoral College in 2037), but had to deal with a Democratic Senate in his first 4 years and a Democratic-Socialist in his last4 years. The Democrat(ic-socialist)’s two terms out of power did not stop their continuing move to the left and left John James with only some tax breaks and the start of the War against Fascism as his main achievements.

James was the only Republican president between 2021 and 2061. His ‘progressive conservatism’ did little to slow down the death of American Conservatism. Millennials and Gen Z forever distrusted right-wing ideologies, while younger Americans started flirting with more esoteric ideas like Libertarianism, Anarchism, Communalism, Agrarianism and Social Credit.

Living standards in 2060 are a lot better than they are in 2020, but they’ve been stagnating for more than a decade and the younger generation is fed up with it and other things like the increasingly authoritarian federal government and general American culture. Through a mixture of Anti-Statism, Libertarianism and Postreligious spirituality they hope to fix everything that they think is wrong with the USA. The democratic-socialists Gen-Z’ers and especially Millennials are fucking terrified. After all last week’s revolutionaries are today’s establishment.

Well, as a Marxist, none of this seem Marxist or anti capitalist, so I wonder about that last part.

On the other hand, that makes sense. An anti government backlash is logical at this point. I'm not sure it'd be a right-libertarian one, but if this is post leftists they're a bit more complicated than that.

And if the demsoc fell into the classic social democracy trap, they kinda need the wake up call (which they won't hear).

It’s just really hard to go from a capitalist system to a socialist system in a liberal democracy I think. That’s why I instead went with Democrats reforming it until it’s barely recognizable. Some on the left of the party do want to actually abandon the capitalist economy.

I wouldn’t exactly describe them as right-libertarian, though. More just a mixture of anti-authoritarianism and a lot of post-whateverisms.

Oh yeah it's basically impossible to exit the capitalist mode of production through liberal democracy. It's designed to stymie large changes while making them pretty easy to wreck in return as well as cutting off politicians from their base and any grassroot movement that put them there.

This is totally a believable development for people who chose that path to end up this way.

The big question is whether the new challengers can do better than bringing back the old system, I guess.

Starving in the Land of Milk and Honey
1873 - 1873: Horace Greeley (Liberal Republican)
1872 (with Benjamin G. Brown): Ulysses S. Grant (Republican)
1873 - 1874: Benjamin G. Brown (Liberal Republican)
1874 - 1877: Benjamin G. Brown (Democratic)
1877 - 1885: James G. Blaine (Republican)
1876 (with Rutherford B. Hayes): Samuel Tilden (Democratic)
1880 (with Marshall Jewell): Samuel J. Randall (Democratic)

1885 - 1889: George F. Edmunds (Republican)
1884 (with Joseph R. Hawley): Thomas F. Bayard (Democratic), Allen G. Thurman (Anti-Monopoly)
1889 - 1893: Grover Cleveland (Democratic)
1888 (with John C. Black): George F. Edmunds (Republican)
1892 (with Arthur P. Gorman): William McKinley (Republican), Alson Streeter (Labor), Leonidas L. Polk (Grange)

1893 - 1894: Arthur P. Gorman (Democratic)
1894 - 0000: Jacob Coxey (Army of the Commonwealth in Christ)

Horace Greeley's shocking victory in the 1872 Election would both lead to his own death months later and the death of reconstruction just months after that. After several years of recession under Benjamin G. Brown, James G. Blaine would be ushered into office. Although he is credited with his work on establishing comprehensive civil service reform he would be seen as a villain by many for his ties to dominating monopolies and financial institutions. The success of the 'Stop Cleveland' movement at the 1884 DNC would only prove temporary as Allen Thurman, the Anti-Monopoly candidate, would take enough votes from Thomas Bayard to give the Republicans another four years in the White House. Thurman, although popular enough in the mainstream to get a few points in the popular votes, would be quickly rejected by his initial radicalizing base. President Edmunds came to exemplify the corruption and superficial splendor of the Gilded Age and his incumbent vulnerabilities made him an easy target for a successful Cleveland in 1888. Cleveland's hard monetary policies made him unpopular with many Americans, especially those in the country's west. His double-down on monetary conservatism in the face of his hardline Republican opponent helped push millions of Americans into the arms of Labor and Grange organizations which found electoral success even despite sluggish campaigns.

The Great Depression, spurned on by the Crash of February 20th, would cripple the United States. The Cleveland Administration faced down massive unrest in the summer of 1893 until Cleveland's own death in a botched surgery. Where Cleveland tended to hedge for the sake of moderation Arthur P. Gorman did not. 1894 would find a way to be an even worse year than 1893 and for months the Gorman Administration would find itself tangled up in a crippling nationwide railroad strike. This strike and the chaos surrounding it set the perfect stage for Jacob Coxey's Army of 60,000 jobless men to lay siege to the National Mall. Now, with President Gorman and Congress retreating from the nation's capital and Coxey and his Army in the White House and the Halls of Congress many wonder how the forces of reaction will strike back.

Mmmm I sure could go for milk and honey right now

1873 - 1873: Horace Greeley (Liberal Republican)
1872 (with Benjamin G. Brown): Ulysses S. Grant (Republican)
1873 - 1874: Benjamin G. Brown (Liberal Republican)
1874 - 1877: Benjamin G. Brown (Democratic)

How are Benjamin G. Brown and Horace Greeley perceived by the public at large, and did Benjamin not run for a second term?

President Edmunds came to exemplify the corruption and superficial splendor of the Gilded Age and his incumbent vulnerabilities made him an easy target for a successful Cleveland in 1888.

Deeply unfortunate, given Edmunds' (brief) support from civil service reformers.

Oh yeah - what were Blaine and Edmunds' policies in regards to African-Americans like?

The success of the 'Stop Cleveland' movement at the 1884 DNC would only prove temporary as Allen Thurman, the Anti-Monopoly candidate, would take enough votes from Thomas Bayard to give the Republicans another four years in the White House

...so what happened to Maria Halpin and Frances Folsom?

Now, with President Gorman and Congress retreating from the nation's capital and Coxey and his Army in the White House and the Halls of Congress many wonder how the forces of reaction will strike back.

Brutal

Has any foreign government recognized the Army of the Commonwealth in Christ?

Also, where the hell are Teddy Roosevelt and William Randolph Hearst in all of this?

If this were like OTL they'd be really hard trivia questions.

Oh yeah - what were Blaine and Edmunds' policies in regards to African-Americans like?

The same sort of malignant neglect that most Republicans practiced during the Gilded Age.

...so what happened to Maria Halpin and Frances Folsom?

Idk pretty similar to OTL.

Not yet, let's say.

If there's enough interest I'll probably write a second part.
