Lists of Heads of Government and Heads of State

I've been thinking for a while about Hiram Johnson becoming President in mid 1920's. Harding offered him the VP slot in 1920 which he refused, and he was outflanked hard by Coolidge when he was testing the waters about making a real push for it in 1924. Between GOP loyalty and co-opting the 1924 Progressive vote, I feel like he could have won a term of his own, but in the end, is there really anything he could have done at that part to stop the Depression? Bringing the New York Fed into line and setting up an SEC will take care of the Wall Street aspects but there was so much more going on that was fundamentally broken that I feel like all you get is "FDR but he actually does what he said he would when he ran" in 1932.

Don't know if this really fits here, but I couldn't think of anywhere else to put it:

THE NEW FOUR FREEDOMS OF THE ASSOIATION OF EUROPEAN NATIONS

FREEDOM OF KNOWLEDGE

Whether it be research progress into vaccinations, communications between businesses or lists of those identified as potential enemies of the state, the ability for knowledge to move freely between member states is of vital importance to the economic growth, peace and security of Europe. All member states of the AEN are committed to ensuring that information is able to freely move without hindrance.

FREEDOM OF IDENTITY

The AEN recognises the key right of all people to live their lives without interference from the government where no laws are being broken. As such, all members are committed to ensuring that nobody will face discrimination based on age, sexual identity or orientation, colour, creed or political views.

FREEDOM OF ECONOMY

For Europe to prosper, economic barriers must not be erected between member states. That means ensuring that all those with the right to freely travel within the European Economic Area face no hindrances in doing so. It means allowing the movement of goods to be as smooth as possible, and it means the removal of regulatory differences between member states where deemed unnecessary.

FREEDOM OF SANCTUARY

The AEN proudly represents a beacon of stability and safety in our ever changing world. This most precious freedom must be defended through firm action against those from outside of Europe who would bring us harm, while welcoming those who's only concern is to gain safety from persecution. As such, we must remain ever vigilant at our borders, extending the hand of friendship, while ensuring that our generosity is never mistaken for weakness.

0000-0000: Rupert, Prince of Wales [6]

[1] Greville II died while his wife Queen Elizabeth was pregnant. Elizabeth acted as nominal head of state until the birth of their son, Greville, who was crowned Greville III.

[2] After the birth of the new King, Greville III's uncle Richard became regent until Greville was eighteen. Greville would die a just over a year later and was succeeded by his one-month-old son William, who became King William III.

[3] William III became king at only one month old. His great uncle Richard, who had previously been regent for William's father Greville, returned to the regency for a second time. Before he ever had the chance to reign on his own, William III died at the age of fifteen. Richard, who had been a regent for a combined total of 33 years, then ascended to the throne for himself, becoming King Richard IV.

[4] Born Robert John, chose his second name for his regnal name.

[5] Born Leopold David, chose John as his regnal name to provide continuity with his much loved father.

[6] Has said he will likely reign as King Greville IV.

I may have been feeling a little pessimistic recently, and I've been thinking of an idea that keeps coming up an how it could work practically

The National Girlfriend Service

Minister for Social Isolation

2023-2027: Siobhan Bailey (Conservative) - Following the Pandemics of 2019-2023 social isolation had reached a peak. Marriages were down, divorces up and the pubs and clubs sector had been decimated while home working increased. The government sought to re-frame social isolation as a social problem rather than a health measure. The new ministry sought to organise club nights in towns that no longer had pubs, along with relationship education.

2027-2029: Atifa Shah (Conservative) - Atifa was appointed to expand the ministry. Among other things, HMG Hookup, an app was set up to facilitate couples meeting and forming relationships, social nights were expanded. The return to a free market for entertainment had mostly failed but government run events with suitable disinfectants proved popular.

2029-2030: Jo Bartosch (Conservative) - A former communist and bi-sexual, Jo began to change politically following the LGB rights and pro-biological women's rights campaigns of the early pandemic era. She introduced a HMG Hookup Pro, an app that allowed greater selectivity for people to find partners from the same social backgrounds. She also expanded its use in the LGB community as a way for people to find viable sperm donors/surrogates.

Secretary of State for Love and Relationships

2030-2034: Jo Bartosch (Conservative) - Following Boris Johnson's third election victory the Ministry of Social Isolation was expanded and given a new name. Jo Bartosch was given responsibilities for bringing together social events organising, relationship formation, relationship education, and the sections of what had been the NHS responsible for sex and maternity. This allowed the government to focus on forming relationships between healthy and viable young people with the capacity to raise children.

2035-2036: Venice Allen (Labour) - Another veteran of the biological women's rights movement of the early pandemic era, Venice was a safe pair of hands to keep the Ministry of Love running as Labour reformed other elements of society, nationalising the key elements of government. Venice wanted to review LGB rights in the Ministry of Love facilities, putting more money into therapy to treat Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria and screening for the condition to prevent the creation of trans widows. However, her feminist work was at odds with "the Dirtbag government" who feared that feminism was a distraction from economic inequalities. Venice resigned in 2036 and became a thorn in the side of the established party, and one of the leading lights of the neo-feminist movement.

2036-2040: Harry Meavis (Labour) - Harry was the first male head of the Ministry of Love and set out to solve what he saw as fundamental disparities in the system - to whit, more males used it than females because the most viable female breeding stock tended to pair off on their own without government intervention. He offered females financial incentives to use the site and to attempt multiple registered relationships before settling down.

2044-2054: Albert Brook (Conservative) - Brook oversaw the height of what was becoming known as The National Girlfriend Service - and smoothed out some of the kinks in its operation. A big issue was that the stipend for first dates for women had allowed for the rise of a class of professional girlfriends. Relationship education was updated to include female responsibilities to male emotional wellbeing, and a clampdown occurred on behaviours that had been reclassified as sex work, particularly in females categorised as Extremely Desireable. Brook also expanded LGBT healthcare - therapeutic cures to Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria had for a long time provided patients with a cure for transgenderism, but with new discoveries from America homosexuality could now be treated in a similar way. Despite his social conservatism Brook was known for lavish parties and never married but was serially and prolifically monogamous. Over-spending on Ministry of Love events would eventually be his downfall.

2054-2058: Stephen Barwell (Conservative) - Barwell took over the Ministry at a time of internal conflict and recession. Government ordered events were gradually being replaced by a growing private market and growing tensions about the environment were rapidly spiralling into a new culture war between the centralist government and the radical fringes. This impacted citizens' tolerance of and enthusiasm for the Ministry of Love.

2058-2060: Gav Clifford (Labour) - Singh's Labour government was the most radical of the 21st century but even so Clifford attempted to be a steady hand on the tiller of "Britain's Greatest Institution". Despite this, change was coming. A new Bill of Rights banned discrimination against homosexuals who refused to have treatment for the condition and a generation of females who found that they could achieve success in the growing private sector that had become rare in the Public sector. At the same time, part funded health insurance took some of the medical responsibilies away from the ministry.

2060-2062: Linda Brown (Labour) - After 24 years, the presence of a woman in charge of the Ministry of Love was considered controversial and was even openly criticised from the opposition front bench. Linda has been considered roughly moderate but with obstacles within the civil service to reform, she rapidly veered towards neo-feminism.

Secretary of State for Gender Relations

2061-: Linda Brown (Labour) - The government reformed the Ministry of Love into a Ministry of Gender Relations and while the Prime Minister stressed that essential services would continue, the ministry would shift attention away from purely romantic relationships to economic ones - particularly economic disparities. Linda has developed a reputation for being puritanical, however her ministry has made allies of some of the more radical voices in the country, including the Anti-Sex League and following a hostile takeover by anti-cure homosexuals, the LGB Alliance.

Fucking hell, this is some insanely dark shit.

Absolutely top work.

1941-XXXX: Clarence Chugwater (Independent--"Imperialist")
defeated in internal power struggle, 1941: Edmund Ironside (Independent--"Military"), Oliver Locker-Lampson (Independent--"Reformist"), Dion Byngham (Independent--"Spiritual Revivalist")

Do you know what day it is today, children? That's right, it's Liberation Day--the anniversary of the glorious day when the Scouts led by Clarence Chugwater, The Boy of Destiny, drove out the cruel Anti-British Coalition who tried to lay old Blighty low. They brought light to Britain's darkest hour with their courage, grit, and above all their supreme devotion to King and Country.

It should never have come to where it did. In the early years of this century Britain was divided and doddering, clinging to the outdated doctrine of Free Trade that was smothering our industries, with wool-headed non-conformists trying to tear down the Church of this nation and milk-blooded pacifists insisting that we cripple our armies as a gesture of friendship. Of course, we all know now that this was the worst mistake any nation could make. The idea of an international brotherhood and permanent peace between nations is a foolish fiction. The world is in a constant state of war and struggle, and any peace between two countries hangs by a fine thread that can be broken by any slight or perceived gain. True peace can only be achieved by constant preparedness for war--or utter domination. And while Britain had dominion in the world in those years, it was decaying, and plans were made against us.

Germany and Russia had long been jealous of our colonial place in the sun, and sought to draw in others who might wish to destroy us. The Swiss, with their shining new merchant marine in the Geneva-Rhône canal, wished to flex their muscles and prove that they deserved to stand as a great power. So to did the Montagnards, with their hordes of foreign mercenaries under their employ spoiling for work and looking for plunder. The ancient heathen empires of China and the Turk sought to entrap Britain in their inscrutable stratagems and reclaim their faded glories. And a whole host of colonial rabble-rousers--from Madhists to Moroccan banditti to the savages of Bollygolla--wanted British rule to end so that they could return to their primitive ignorance untroubled by civilisation. All these forces worked in concert to assault Britain; the idea that their simultaneous invasions were a mass coincidence is patently ridiculous and treasonous. All envied Britain, and all wished her doomed.

Once freedom had been regained for the Home Isles by pitting the Huns and Mongols against each other, the new government had much to accomplish. While the British people had gifted them a sweeping majority in favour of regaining glory, a mass military buildup needed to be achieved before Good Old-Fashioned English Steel could drive the Madhists and Mandarins and other colonial brutes from our rightful holdings, and take back our other colonies from the cold hands of our foes. The new Royal Ordnance factories pumped out the guns needed, and the national mandatory training system ensured that the populace were all fighting fit and fit to fight. The doctrine of the All-Nation Army proved itself well in the Liberation, and as I speak to you today, I have every confidence that you will also fight with as much steel and pluck as those then. In our proud Empire, every man, woman, and child can take up arms if needs be, and fight for King and Country, in factories and on battlefields.

Of course, any army is only as good as those who lead it. Like any army, the British nation needed as leaders those men with fighting experience, tactical minds, and eugenical breeding--the destiny of the British people cannot be in the hands of the common rabble. Twelve years ago this lesson was proved well. At one of Britain's most critical junctures--with Ireland embroiled in a German-funded Fenian uprising and the War For India reaching a fever pitch, foolish and weak-willed Britons decided to sweep away those who had led them so well. With a ramshackle coalition of radical Marxians, mouth-frothing anarchists, and yellow-bellied traitors holding the reigns of power, the fate of the nation was at stake. Once again, decisive action came from the mightiest fighting force in Britain, the envy of the world, the secret army where every soldier is as cunning as a general and tough as a Marine--the Boy Scouts! Stand tall with pride, children, and know that it was your predecessors who saved Britain from Hunnic Slavery and Red Treason both. You are the heirs to Britain's greatest tradition.

Now, on this anniversary, we must look both to the past and the future. Our troops teem in their hundreds of thousands, well-trained and well-armed. The new Navy commands the seas with massive firepower and tough Jack Tars, and our Air Force swarms in its vast numbers--indeed, this whole island is as an airstrip for the brave new Knights of the Sky. United in one great brotherhood by the ideals of National Hygiene, National Preparedness, and National Independence, the world stands at your feet. You may soon, children, take part in the greatest battle mankind will ever know, a battle that will purify mankind as the furnace purifies metal. The Hunnish and Mongolic empires, girded with both savage hordes of men and brutal machinery, dominate the Eurasian continent, and are allied with the innumerable masses of East Asia. But like all foes, they will surely fall under the guns of British soldiers! How can we fail, when at the head of our troops is the master-tactician, the supreme warrior of the Anglo-Saxon people, the latter-day Alexander, the great liberator? Hail, Chugwater! Hail, the Boy of Destiny!

We’ve always been at War with Eurasia and Big Boy is watching You!

This was both funny and horrible and I have the strong feeling that the rest of the world is watching Britain with confusion.

I had no idea PG Wodehouse did invasion literature! That's... certainly a heck of a short TL you've created there

As someone who's chugging along with his Wodehouse pastiche, it can be quite demoralising when you find one of the man's minor works and realise that he was funnier on his off-days than most of us are at our best.
