Julian Glover as "the Doctor" in Dr Who

I actually did this in a collaborative piece on the RPG.net forum many moons ago. Glover was the ATL 2nd doctor from around 65-70 and was somewhat a dandyish figure but more modern than OTL 3rd. Heres the write-up.

"This new Doctor was a bon-vivant and wit, charming but with a wistful and dreamy air. This concealed the razor sharp mind of a master chess player, always one step ahead of his opponents, natural or unnatural. Though a much younger man than the previous Doctor (Glover was 33 at the time he took over) this Doctor was a confirmed pacifist and took no violent action unless in self defence. This was mandated by TBN who had become concerned again by the rising levels of violence in the show towards the end of Maddens run.

This lead to a much more structured cast around Glover, with a male and female companion, one to handle the action the other to act as the audience surrogate and ask questions. This weekly interaction lead to a much more relaxed and gregarious Doctor, not as sharp as Maddens portrayal who was unfailingly polite with nearly everyone; if maybe a touch condescending with those slow on the uptake.

When it came to those of a sadistic or evil bent the Doctor wasted in no time in confronting them, with a barely concealed fury. Since this Doctor used no violence he confronted evil head on with logic and debate; one famous episode has him reduce the main villain to tears by logically picking holes in hi plans until they fall to pieces.

Glover's Doctor became something of an ambassador for "Swinging London". Dressed in the finest Carnaby Street had to offer and a good looking young man he became an overnight sensation and Doctor Who became a worldwide hit. "Who-mania" was everywhere, the show reaching a peak with the 1968-69 season that took years to replicate. This Doctor was seen to drink, enjoyed dancing and even was seen to visit nightclubs and casinos with his companions; it was remarked at the time the show should be renamed Doctor 007!

With the science fiction elements becoming more and more prevelant TBN finally decided to bite the bullet and accept this was what the public wanted but decreed that the action must stay somewhat grounded in reality, no alien invasions and the like. Writers such as Nigel Kneale and Ramsey Campebll were hired to craft a distinictly British style of Science Fiction.

Doctor Who would never be the same again"
