JFK's second term

Where did the idea that JFK was a radical come from (J. Edgar in 1995's Nixon: "We've already had one radical in the White House - I don't think it could stand another!")?
From his family and aides who started shaping his image and legacy almost from the moment he was shot - the whole Camelot myth created out of whole cloth, the son's 'unprompted' salute at the funeral, making sure that their version of events was the official one, and IIRC possibly also some judicious editing or removal of files that might have reflected poorly on the President. Throw in the baby boomers and you're there.
