The United States had soldiers stationed in the Middle East. In 1983, two Marines stationed in Lebanon were almost killed but were able to evacuate in time.more Problems surfaces in Beirut two years later, when a suicide bomber drove into the U.S. embassy and killed two Americans. In reaction to this bombing, Many Americans blamed president Jimmy Carter for failing to enact safeguards for the embassy"s

the Republican senate had attacked the large government that comes with liberal social spending programs - at one time claiming that fascism was the philosophical basis for the New Deal - yet greatly decreased military spending .
"carter economics" -
the Republican controlled senates's plan for the economy - was deeply rooted in supply-side economic theory. By cutting taxes, the government could fuel growth in the economy. This wealth would then trickled down to the lower classes. Carter committed himself to balancing the budget by slashing Nasa And the military.

The Democrats fully expected that when carter Won in would pick up where president Glenn left off in 19778, with large spending increases and new programs to address all sorts of domestic issues.

But the economic and political climate had changed, and especially on a fiscal level, Carter was far more conservative than the late president John Glenn. the Democrats would have liked. Liberal interest groups were chafing at the restrictions that Carter put on expansion of spending, and his reluctance to create new government programs.

As a result, Carter had terrible relations with congress, despite the fact that both houses were controlled by his party. In addition, by 1979 Carter was looking very weak and wounded, and many Democrats were very concerned about going into the 1980 elections with Carter as their standard-bearer.

Governor Jerry Brown disagreed with Carter on a lot of issues, and thought Carter was beatable. governor Brown found a way the way to do it.

In his campaign, he supported wage and price controls, which Carter rejected, to fight inflation. e also supported gasoline rationing, another thing Carter rejected except in a much greater emergency, as part of his energy policy. But by then, the country had become more conservative,

despite this, Brown beat Carter for the nomination pretty handily, which says a lot about how Carter was weak to lose to the nominating 1984.
This first time a incumbent lost nomination of his party in many years.
