Greenealogist Makes Maps (and is bad at thread titles)

Washington state is unique in having legalised abortion through referendum, 49 years ago. There's a very detailed look at the campaign here, which I urge reading for context far beyond what I could give: http://depts.washington.edu/civilr/referendum20.htm. Thought it was an interesting look at a historical curiosity.

What on earth is up with San Juan County/Island? Or is it just the colour scheme making it stand out when it's not that much more than some other areas?

It's definitely San Juan you're talking about, and I really don't know - I think it's because it's so small, there were only about two thousand votes cast and the YES side won by eight hundred. You can see a similar thing for NO in Garfield County, but there were no thirty to forty percent yes areas which makes it stand out. I guess it prefigures SJ's huge Democratic shift during the eighties.

Got a request to try and draw a fair map of Georgia. Turns out that's really hard, this is attempt number 9 and I'm still not really happy with it, mostly because of the hoops I had to jump through to create a VRA district in southwest Georgia that doesn't include Macon.

Wisconsin, 1910, aka When Socialism Came to Milwaukee. The Social Democrats swept the city offices and won large numbers of state assemblymen as well as an extra state senate seat and a congressman. The mayor, Emil Seidel, is best known for serving as Eugene V. Debs' running mate for both of his 1912 when the pair managed 6% of the popular votes and cracked double figures in a number of states, the best being Nevada and Oklahoma, as well as coming second in Florida. It was the cradle of Sewer Socialism, and Milwaukee had Socialist mayors from 1910 onwards with only a few interruptions until 1960, including Daniel Hoan's 24-year stint at the head of the longest-serving Socialist administration in US history.

Some (incredibly soft) AH from a world where, amongst many other things, cars never caught on beyond being luxury items.

Since their establishment by the Rationalist government in the 1920s, the Metropolitan Transport Authorities have been the bedrock of local transportation in the Kingdom of England. Plymouth MTA has one of the best reputations for urban and suburban rail in the country, with over 95% satisfaction rates. Shown below is the map of ironway services Plymouth MTA operates in and around the city. As is universal outside of Wales, the ironway infrastructure is entirely owned by the English Ironway Connexion, as are the major stations, but most of the stations are owned by the authority, as is the rolling stock, stabled primarily at the Blagdon Depot. Most recently, in 2014, the city took over the peak-only stopping service from Ivybridge to Plymouth Friary, and expanded it into a cross-city line running to St Germans. This also allowed them to take complete control of Plymouth Friary station, as now only very occasional EIC-operated trains make use of it, generally if a diversion from Central is required for any reason. There is not very much room for future expansion of the network, although there have been suggestions of stations at Sparkwell and Sandacre Bay should prospective housing developments come to fruition. With approaching thirty million journeys a year, Plymouth MTA Ironways has the third-highest ridership in the South-West, and these figures are on course to continue growing as the city expands further as part of its role as a relief port for overloaded Southampton.

church of the moon boxes.png
The Church of the Moon is the largest extra-terrestrial member of the Anglican Communion in terms of membership. Separated from the Church of the Beyond in the First Division of 1948, it serves Anglicans across most of the Moon - Anglicans in Lunar America are part of the hierarchy of the Episcopal Church of the United States. It is currently divided into nine provinces, most of which are in the colony of Arthuria. It is the second-largest denomination on the British Moon behind the Lunar Uniting Church. The Church of the Moon (with the exception of the Diocese Luna-extra-Britain) is distinctly Low Church and is one of the most active missionary churches in the Anglican Communion. It was also one of the primary agitating forces for lunar colonial self-government during the 1950's and 60's, and is currently very involved in LIPS (Lunar Increase in Population Scheme).

The current Primate of the Church is the Archbishop of Camelot, Petroc Trevithick-Thomas. Trevithick-Thomas was the youngest child of a large and prosperous farming family in Newtonvyvyan, about forty miles north of Camelot. He studied theology at Trinity College, Cambridge, before going on to train as a priest at Latimer College in Worcester. He returned to Arthuria to become a priest, and took up a living in the remote town of Petrockscombe, in the Wilderness River region of Lyonesse. He impressed in this position, and went on to serve parishes throughout north-eastern Arthuria before being appointed Dean of Porthkeyne, in the Province of Brannel, in 1983. He returned, however, to the north-east, when he was consecrated as Bishop of Ys four years later. As Bishop of Ys, he became a popular broadcaster on the Solar Service, and gained a reputation for thoughtful yet fiery sermons and preaching. When Jago Cobeldick passed away after thirty-five years as Archbishop of Camelot in 2001, Trevithick-Thomas was seen as the natural choice to succeed him. As Archbishop, he has been somewhat controversial, particularly in his forthright views on public morality issues, which caused a notable and very public split with his son Judicael, an inverts' rights agitator, and in his seeking closer ties with the Lunar Uniting Church. He is also known for his long-running feud with the Archbishop of Callisto, Morris Mitchell, with whom he has engaged in a number of public debates on issues such as the ordination of women, pacifism and conservationism.

[something from a vaguely retrofuture-style world I've been toying with on and off for years]

Made this ages ago but it came up on twitter so thought I'd put it here: the US but the Congressional Districts have the same average population as UK parliamentary constituencies, giving 3,625 districts, plus UK-style names.
State with the most districts: California - 438
State with the least districts: Wyoming - 7
Safest Dem seat: Chicago, Englewood (Illinois, 99.59% D-0.41% R)
Safest Rep seat: Denham Springs and Lockhart (Louisiana, 88.26% R-11.74% D)
Most marginal seat: Evesham (New Jersey, 24,381 D votes to 24,379 R votes)

Amazing work! Very impressive.

Someone on Twitter asked me to do this (checks notes) a year and five months ago, and I never forget when I've promised something.
Looking back, I would do a LOT differently with this project these days. Even by British standards, some of these seats have population divergences which are just too big.Oklahoma Extra Data.png

After some gin, time to post something (less depressing) from this universe, feat. my university never abandoning a collegiate structure:

And more depressing than the above but less than the vignette, election maps! (2012 above, 2016 below, note the increase in malapportionment)
