All helpful answers are welcome.

There's also the Vajont Dam disaster which occurred in 1963 – due to dodgy local geology that had been covered up the filling of the dam caused a landslide which created a megatsunami sending 50 million cubic metres of water in a wave 250 metres high over the top of it. Several towns downriver were destroyed killing 1,917 people. The dam suffered only minor damage and was rebuilt, I thought it was an interesting example of a disaster that didn't involve the failure of the dam itself.

There is also a terrifying, even larger cataclysm in India in 1979. And of course China did even worse, in 1975 Mao era.

Afsluitdijk

Not really anything catastrophic immediately though the ecology of the IJsselmeer would be screwed pretty quickly. If the Afsluitdijk is completely destroyed and followed up by a big storm there could be big problems but don't forget that the IJsselmeer is ringed by dykes as well and there is the Houtribdijk they cuts the IJsselmeer in half as well.

So if they were both destroyed what would happen?
