Insane indeed.

Some of those accidents in Vietnam were more like 'accidents', right? Hence where we get the word fragging from?

I am given to understand there was a mixture of causes with the accidents:

1. Genuine accident with pin caught on branch.
2. "Accident" involving a not-competent junior officer being removed - fragging (also known as spotting in earlier times in the British Army).
3. "Accident" involving a soldier deciding they'd simply couldn't take any more.

Yes. He mentions his time there in his book "The Pigeon Tunnel." He was gathering material for one of his novels set there, and he was obsessive about getting the details right.
I was going to say, the dates wouldn't fit for it being before he started his writing career, so...that's something. Puts my trip to Limehouse to stare at a wall in perspective.
