Callan's Graphics and Things

The Doctor turned around to Mattie's blank face. It was obvious to her that the Rani was bad news but not much more. It was becoming a bad habit for the Doctor, assuming that she was as up to speed with what had happened to him practically centuries ago.

"She's a scientist. A Time Lord scientist. But a bit more than that..." the Doctor tried to think of a comparison. "Mattie, do you know where the word bikini comes from? Don't know if it's a thing on your earth but it's the name of a swimsuit of all things here. But that's named after a place called Bikini Atoll. It's a group of beautiful small islands in the South Pacific. I watched Halley's comet pass over there in 1531, I'd gotten bored of the Renaissance and wanted a change of great cultures. But it's not there now. The people who lived there were forced to move because a great power decided that it was a great place to test out their nuclear weaponry. Imagine being forced from your home, the only place you and everyone in your life has ever known, so a bunch of people from far away can blow it up to see how big the explosion is. Imagine that, but whole planets. That's the Rani. That's what she does."

Mattie absorbed the explanation with revulsion and sadness. For the first time in a while, wasn't sure what she wanted to ask next. "How many Time Lords are there like her?"

"Like her?"

"Baddies, great villains, historical criminals. How many of your people use this impossible technology that takes us anywhere and everywhere to just stamp on everyone in their path. How many are there like that?"

"Only a few."

"That's a few too many."

"you know, a man like you, overcaffeinated, 70-hour weeks, soaked like a washcloth, always angry, always shouting, fifty-sixty years ago a man like you would've dropped dead at fifty from a massive heart attack with no warning. But now people, or at least white middle-aged-upper-middle-class men such as yourself are way healthier, medicine's come a long way. So you won't meet such a dramatic karmic end, all I have to hope for is that in thirty years you'll be in a care home and the kids you never see will return the favour and then and only then will you truly realise just how empty you are."

Is this a line from something?

Highlights:

- The Filler Stuff before the polls close is so hilariously naff
- The polling numbers were basically spot on- although they did seem to understate the Tories a bit and overstate the Liberals quite a bit more- but I didn't really clock how the rise of the NDP clearly broke a lot of the models they were using.
- 2011 is fascinating as an election because it really did all turn around halfway through the campaign in a way literally no-one saw coming, basically all the hard work Layton had put in for the previous eight years finally paying off.
- God, Ignatieff was shit, wasn't he?
- The panel laugh out loud when it becomes clear that Ruth Ellen Brosseau ("Vegas Girl") has won.
- It's hard to overstate just how unbelievable the Orange Wave was at the time- the NDP basically had zero profile in the province before then, in spite of Layton and his predecessor's various attempts to court the province. Mulcair winning a safe Liberal seat in a by-election in Montreal in 2008 was really the preview of where things were going, even as the NDP went nowhere in the rest of the province in that year's election.
- 2011 is the first time federalists won a majority of seats in Quebec since 1988, and that's been the case ever since, so quite historically significant.
- What's also clear is how weak the Tories' majority coalition was. It basically required maxing out the West and Ontario to compensate for the Tories' eternal dashing of hopes in Quebec. And even then, whether the Tories actually got over the liine was a question mark until quite late in the day, requiring everything to go wrong for the Liberals and everything to go right for the NDP. Given this election is still the only time the right has won a majority since the 1980s it's all not great.

Disregard this, I am a muppet and thought you were ranking Doctors.

Would argue for moving Series 11 up a couple of places, tho.
I am a muppet as well and thought the same!

I was telling Callan that I think the Clara series (especially fucking S9) might actually be worse than anything so far!
