Seth MacFarlane's first foray into primetime animation was 1999's "Family Guy". It lasted two seasons before being axed in 1999, so the network could make primetime room for their headline "Deal or No Deal" show. Despite campaigns from ardent fans insisting on it's status as a cult classic, Fox has yet to renew the series. Instead of getting mad, however, MacFarlane got even.

His next attempt scavenged components of his previous two-season show, recasting a fan favourite as "Joe Swanson: American Dad!", soon dropping the prefix after the first season and becoming known simply as "American Dad!" and proving to be much more of a hit with both the network and it's viewers. The titular Joe had the use of his legs restored (later elaborated on as the end result of physical therapy) Wendy Schaal replaced Jennifer Tilly as the voice of Bonnie. Kevin, previously the older brother, was made a younger brother to the older Haley. Having been canonically uprooted from their home in Rhode Island, Swanson now worked as a CIA officer in Langley, Virginia, allowing for plentiful political commentary. There was also the addition of two talking animals - Klaus, a former European mastermind who had his body swapped with a goldfish, and Roger, the talking alien Joe had rescued from Area 51 in his early CIA years.

As the times changed, so did America's favourite yellow family, the Simpsons. Starting with Season 10, show-runners made the controversial decision to start gradually advancing the ages of characters so, in the words of creator Matt Groening, the show could grow with the viewers. Initially met with some backlash, many fans soon became enthralled with the new family arcs; Bart and Lisa were both attending high school and entered into reoccurring relationships, while Maggie had taken her siblings place as the Elementary School child. The Season 13 canonical death of Mister Burns saw Homer move up in the ranks of the Nuclear Power Plant while Marge became involved in local politics -- tho it should be noted the "Councilwoman Simpson" season isn't as fondly remembered as others will tell you. There were also the influential celebrity cameos, such as actress Shirley Temple, musician John Lennon and future President Paul Wellstone.

With the dysfunctional-family-orientated running it's course, the 'primetime animation' genre flourished into a multifaceted and explorative variation of what many would figure the domain controlled by Groening and MacFarlane. Many new creative shows, such as Adult Swim's "Steven Universe", Netflix's "Octopus Pie" and the six-season-strong "Ugly Americans" have now adored by millions every other weeknight, sandwiched neatly in between re-runs of "Malcolm in the Middle" and any odd "60 Minutes" expose on whatever new drug kids are doing.
