Very nice. I love the conceit of telling the story of this alternate post-Cold War world through Time magazine Person of the Year selections, especially your inclusion of "The American Soldier" and "The Student"; Time still does gimmicky Person of the Year selections ITTL as well I see.

Also Joe Lieberman finally bit the bullet and became a Republican.

I would normally be a big fan of any TL that mentions Bill Yellowtail as a national political figure but as this President list is a weird intersection of things I am personally connected to I should point out that as far as I know McChrystal being a Democrat wasn't a Bush-era thing but his lifelong political affiliation.

yeah but i’m using him as a sort of birth of a new day (SHOUTOUT THE 2814 ALBUM) for republicans candidate, but if it’s too unrealistic i’ll replace him with ray metcalfe

Like a Colin Powell, but more up to date? I like the idea but you'd probably have guys having alternate military careers if politics are this different. If you want someone super hip you pick a guy who OTL didn't make a big splash in the Army.

Charles Swannack is a good candidate if you want a square-jawed white general-looking dude. OTL his Army career ended because he was fucking a captain attached to division headquarters while we were in Iraq, but he tried to spin that into a political career OTL and I can see him running for President if things work out well for him. Swannack got commissioned in 1979 and McChrystal in 1976. He's not an intellectual type like the celebrity generals of the OTL late 2000's (McChrystal, Mattis, Petraeus) were, but if the circumstances would have been right for a more simple armyarmyarmy guy like him to get famous in the mid/late 2000's, he could have run for President.

If you want to get deep into hipsterdom, say Harry Tunnell ran for President. He's an egghead like McChrystal and also looks like an Army general from central casting should look (unlike skinny PhDs like Petraeus and Mattis). In OTL his career spectacularly foundered on a rock in 2010 and he never got his star. Like Swannack, he got very political and burned a lot of bridges in his own defense. I think he was commissioned in 1988, so to run for President in 2016 he would probably have to have gotten out as a colonel as per OTL, but you could probably pitch someone with his attitude as the right man for the job if circumstances had turned out more in his favor. Tunnell is more of a Flynn/McMaster type of genius iconoclast within the Army than a Swannack-type of super-establishment figure.

You could also say Lloyd Austin as a four-star super establishment type (and also black). Austin isn't someone I can picture running for President with the personality and attitude he has, but maybe he happens to be in command of something important during a high-profile event and the Republicans draft him the way they did Eisenhower.

I have no idea if any of these guys are actually Republicans, but Swannack looks like one and your alt-Tunnell would run as one because he's disenchanted with the Democratic administration.

i was just planning on having bauer do better in 2000 iowa and be able to mobilize conservative opposition to bush by running a full on religious right/populist anti-PRC campaign to unite the old strands of the “buchanan coalition”

however that is entirely possible as well

kasich speaking at the DNC means pretty much one thing i think we all need to admit:

if roe v wade ever got overturned, democrats would campaign on resetting it and then never do anything about it ever

this includes appointing pro life democrats to the SC
