Chavez's route to the White House is similar to that of Barack Obama in real life, but three decades earlier and with Chavez being the first Hispanic US President rather than the first black US President. This also helps explain why Chavez performed a bit more strongly in the Southwest here than Obama did in both 2008 and 2012. BTW, just how much did Chavez lose Texas by?

I didn’t bother calculating the numbers, but I figure the Connally factor outweighed Chavez’s strengths with Hispanics and liberals.
