In OTL, the choice of the Cross of Lorraine as a symbol for the Free French (originally just the navy, then informally extended to all forces) was suggested by vice-admiral Emile Muselier. A lesser-known symbol which the cross superseded was a winged sword with laurels. The cross was admittedly a clever choice because it stood as a counter-symbol to the swastika, appealed to Catholic sensibilities, referred to a part of France that had been annexed by Germany (again), and was easy to draw or paint in just a few strokes.
However in WIAF, Muselier may or may not be around, and the leader of the Free French is Georges Mandel instead of De Gaulle. As a Jew, Mandel might not be enthused about picking a Christian symbol as a political emblem, so I would like to ask what suggestions you fellows might have. It should preferably be something visually striking and easy to paint.
