Alternate Terminology: Vinyl Destination - Phonographs, Gramophones and Fighting Over A Dog

An interesting note to throw in here- the last few years Radio 3 have been recording some concerts in full surround sound to replicate the effects of having different instruments playing not just on the left or right side of the auditorium, but also when they're playing in front, behind, on an upper balcony and so forth.

They have, of course, decided to dub these recordings as 'binaural sound'.

A pedant writes: 12 inch microgroove albums are rotated at 33.333 recurring rotations per minute, due to the ready availability of 3,600 rpm motors, geared at a ratio of 108:0

This meant initial 12" records with 76 µm groove could contain 11 minutes of music, equivalent to a 1,000 foot run of 35mm film at 24 frames per second

16 inch discs containing 15 minutes of music were also produced.

Columbia and RCA-Victor developed 25 µm groove LP records simultaneously.

I knew I was going to miss something when it came to talking about records because of how much background there is, but thanks for the info.
