POD: John Gorton has an attack of sense, realises that in a double dissolution election with the lower quota, it is much smarter to run for a Senate seat in one of the states, rather than in the hopeless Australian Capital Territory.
He probably would would have won a Senate spot had he done so...

He's allocated a six year term.
Senator Gorton will be a pointed thorn in Malcolm Fraser's side and possibly allies with Don Chipp when the Australian Democrats are formed in 1977.
