I think you've got to use pinyin nowadays just so people can look up names in a coherent way. I will defend Wade-Giles as generally being a much better clue to roughly how a name sounds to an English-speaker (I would never have to correct anyone pronouncing Chinese Qs as kw or k...) but I don't think it's worth using in a TL unless you're going for a proper Victorian atmosphere or something.
