I can only imagine the reaction if that had happened in a media age like today - broadcast everywhere, huge amounts of analyses from all sides, theories and conspiracy theories galore, social media going wild...

Otoh, we might have more evidence as to what actually happened.
On the gripping hand, it might just pose more questions.

There'd be analysts on every single television programme. There'd be amateur analysts on facebook (and internet fora like this one) declaiming that they had somehow divined the Truth (capital intended), no matter how unlikely the case.
