Absolutely correct- but given my opinion of Cixi's ability at factional politics, I thought that the Emperor surviving was more likely than Gong outplaying her.

My general solution in the past was to simply have her suffer a unfortunately fatal accident. It's been literal years since I looked at it so I've got no idea what relations were like between father and son or how elevation might have affected the family dynamic.
